AICM Prompts Outcry from Travelers Over New Uber Pickup Points

Frustration Grows Over New Uber Pickup Points at Mexico City Airport

Mexico City International Airport (AICM) has imposed new restrictions on ridesharing services, sparking widespread discontent among travelers.

Changes Implemented: Limited Pickup Locations

Last Wednesday, AICM announced that ridesharing apps like Uber, Cabify, and Didi are no longer allowed to pick up passengers within terminal grounds. Instead, new designated pickup spots have been established – one for Terminal 1 and another for Terminal 2.

After the announcement, two videos were released showing how passengers can navigate to these new locations. However, the response was overwhelmingly negative, questioning the practicality and safety of the new arrangement.

Public Outcry: Voices of Dissent

Travelers expressed frustration over the additional distance they must now walk with their luggage, raising safety concerns about potential theft. Comments included:

  • “You really think we are going to walk such a long distance with suitcases while also risking getting mugged?”
  • “This is the service and security you are offering?”
  • “Should I just walk all the way home?”

Some sarcastically suggested they might need to greet their Uber drivers as family to circumvent the restriction.

Uber’s Response: Standing Firm

Uber countered the AICM’s ruling, claiming a legal injunction permits it to continue pickups within the terminals. The company emphasized its right to offer passengers their preferred transport options.

Meanwhile, the AICM stated there would be penalties for violations, with fines ranging from 43,440 pesos (approximately USD $2,254) to 130,320 pesos (USD $6,762), and potential vehicle impoundment.

Other Ridesharing Services: Adapting to Change

Didi has expressed willingness to comply with the new regulations, highlighting its commitment to cooperation with authorities for better mobility solutions at the airport.

As this situation unfolds, many are left contemplating the future of ridesharing options at AICM.
