Buying Group’s Mexico Trip a Treat for 48 Next Generation Members

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — National independent retail buying group Furniture First welcomed 48 NextGen individuals from 26 member stores to a recent four-day, three-night trip in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.

Sponsored by two of Furniture First’s supplier partners, the trip included several staff members from the group. The resort atmosphere provided a perfect backdrop for relaxation and informal networking.

From Team Building to Best Practices

Participants engaged in various organized activities aimed at fostering team building, such as a round of Furniture First Family Feud and assembling tropical-themed Lego sets. More serious discussions included troubleshooting sessions and Best Practice exchanges on topics like driving store traffic and managing corporate culture.

The retreat culminated with a catamaran excursion featuring snorkeling in the gulf, followed by a private dinner.

Creating Future Leaders

Mack Kauffman, director of sleep products at Furniture First, emphasized the importance of these gatherings: “We aim to remove them from regular pressures. This environment allows them to share experiences with peers and gain new perspectives to address challenges.”

To join the NextGen group, individuals must be part of the current generation’s succession plan. Andrew Kauffman, Furniture First CEO, highlighted the importance of training these future retail leaders to adapt and thrive amid upcoming store retirements.

“Many stores have been family-owned for decades. Preparing the next generation to take over is critical for long-term success,” Kauffman stated.

THOUGHTS ON THE EVENT

This enriching experience not only reinforces the bonds among NextGen members but also equips them with the skills necessary for effective store management in the future.
