Cancun Airport Fines Travelers for Multiple Devices
Cancun Airport's New Device Restrictions: Travelers Beware
Cancun International Airport, Mexico's busiest airport, has implemented stricter regulations on the number of electronic devices travelers can bring, leading to surprising fines.
Understanding the Fine
Florida entrepreneur Tammy Levent recently faced a $200 fine after arriving at Cancun Airport with both a laptop and an iPad. Despite her frequent visits over the past decade, this was the first time she encountered issues regarding the number of devices.
According to Mexican customs regulations, travelers are limited to one portable computer, including laptops and tablets. Bringing more than one could result in a 19% tax applied to the total deemed value of excess devices, which can reach up to $4,000.
Enforcement of Outdated Laws
The law has been in place for a long time, but recent enforcements have caught many travelers off guard. While regulations about portable electronics, like the allowance for just one laptop/tablet, are not newly established, they hadn't been strictly enforced until now.
Michael Boguslavskiy, a travel agent specializing in Cancun trips, noted that this change aligns with a greater scrutiny of travelers—potentially due to the rise in tourists bringing multiple devices for resale or to increase tax revenue.
Advising Travelers
To avoid such fines, Boguslavskiy recommends that travelers familiarize themselves with the local customs regulations prior to their trip. In addition, travelers should be cautious of other rules, such as limits on tax-free cameras and tobacco.
Levent, dissatisfied with her experience, sent formal complaints to Mexican officials but received a response indicating that inspections are performed at random.
As international travel resumes, vigilance regarding local customs regulations remains essential to prevent unexpected fines.
