Vegas Golden Knights Strengthen Ties in Mexico with Historic LosVGK Trip
The Vegas Golden Knights marked a significant milestone for their LosVGK initiative during a four-day trip to Mexico, which included clinics and fan events in Mexico City, Metepec, and Monterrey. The goal was to grow interest in hockey and enhance the Vegas Golden Knights brand among young fans.
A Milestone Year: LosVGK Takes Flight
Launched in October 2023, the LosVGK initiative hit a major milestone by hosting its first international events. Benjamin Thomas, Director of Latino Marketing and Outreach for the Golden Knights, highlighted the rapid momentum of the program.
The trip began with a media event in Mexico City, followed by various activities in Metepec including off-ice ball hockey clinics. In Monterrey, they held a ball hockey clinic that drew about 50 children at a time, exceeding expectations.
Building Community: The Vision for VGK Hockey
The aim of the trip was to foster a VGK hockey community and create lasting connections. Local families with ties to Las Vegas shared their experiences, showcasing an existing Golden Knights fanbase in Mexico City.
Collaborations included activities with Diego de la Garma, the Technical Director for the Mexican Ice Hockey Federation, who emphasized the importance of inspiring the youth to play hockey.
Giving Back: A Special Day with Dr. Sonrisas Foundation
The final day focused on the Dr. Sonrisas Foundation, benefiting children with cancer. These kids, many experiencing hockey for the first time, participated in ball hockey and ice skating, generating uplifting experiences that Thomas deemed vital for morale.
Looking Ahead: Future Growth for LosVGK
With successful events behind them, the Golden Knights are optimistic about expanding the LosVGK initiative to further connect with the Mexican community in Vegas and beyond.
"Our goal is to ensure that Mexicans in Vegas know there is a thriving hockey community here and that the VGK care about them, extending beyond the sport itself," de la Garma concluded.
