Mexico travel changes for Hurricane Helene
MEXICO TRAVEL CHANGES: ACCOMMODATIONS FOR FLIGHT, CRUISE DISRUPTIONS

Hurricane Helene is poised to strike Florida as a Category 3 storm, causing heavy rain and disruptions in popular Caribbean tourist destinations.
The National Hurricane Center warns that the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico is under Tropical Storm and Hurricane Warnings.
Travelers flying to or from Mexico may face significant travel disruptions. As of Wednesday, 12% of flights to Cancun have been canceled and 14% delayed, while originating flights saw cancellations at 16% and delays at 19%, according to FlightAware.
WHICH AIRLINES HAVE ISSUED MEXICO TRAVEL WAIVERS?
- Alaska Airlines: Free rebooking or cancellation for flights to or from Cancun between Sept. 25-27, must be completed by Sept. 30.
- American Airlines: Free rebooking for flights to Cancun and Cozumel through Sept. 27, must be rebooked by Sept. 27 and completed by Oct. 4.
- Delta Air Lines: Free rebooking for flights scheduled to Cancun between Sept. 25-27, tickets must be reissued by Oct. 4.
- Frontier Airlines: Free rebooking for flights through Sept. 25; fare differences may apply.
- Southwest Airlines: Free rebooking or standby for flights through Sept. 25, with a request for refunds possible for unused tickets.
- Spirit Airlines: Free rebooking through Oct. 2 for scheduled flights through Sept. 25, fare differences may apply afterward.
- United Airlines: Free rebooking for flights scheduled to Cancun and Cozumel before Sept. 27, completed by Oct. 4.
WHAT MEXICO CRUISES ARE IMPACTED?
Carnival Cruise Line has altered several itineraries due to the storm:
- Carnival Paradise: Swapped a visit to Cozumel for Costa Maya.
- Carnival Valor: Canceled Cozumel stop on Tuesday.
- Carnival Horizon: Canceled Grand Cayman stop, visiting Amber Cove instead.
Royal Caribbean has reported changes to five cruise itineraries:
- Independence of the Seas: Canceled Cozumel stop, instead visiting Nassau.
- Mariner of the Seas: Skipped Cozumel for a day at sea.
- Serenade of the Seas: Swapped stops in Cozumel and Costa Maya for Freeport and Nassau.
- Wonder of the Seas: Canceled many stops, instead visiting St. Thomas and St. Maarten.
- Grandeur of the Seas: Replaced Costa Maya and Cozumel with stops in Nassau and Freeport.
