Protesters block Tijuana airport, affecting thousands of travelers
Protesters Blockade Tijuana Airport, Disrupting Thousands
Tijuana's international airport faced significant disruptions when residents of the Maclovio Rojas neighborhood staged a blockade for 11 hours on Wednesday, impacting many travelers.
Blockade Outcomes: Travelers Affected
The blockade halted traffic to and from the airport, leading to numerous passengers missing their flights. Others had to walk over a mile with their luggage since shuttles and taxi services were unavailable.
Demands of Protesters
The demonstrators protested over the lack of land titles for homes in their area, claiming promises made by the state of Baja California and former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador remain unfulfilled. They seek ownership documents and essential infrastructure improvements.
Past Activism and Future Meetings
Previously, the same residents had protested at an oil refinery, which led to fuel shortages. After negotiations, they initially received assurances of title grants. However, these titles were reportedly never issued, prompting the recent airport protest.
During the blockade, the protesters made an effort to assist fellow travelers by providing rides to hundreds. The protest ended after federal officials agreed to a meeting later this week.
“We're standing firm for our rights and simply asking for the fulfillment of promises made,” stated Cassandra Hernández, a spokesperson for the demonstrators.
