SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Residents of Tijuana’s Maclovio Rojas neighborhood staged an 11-hour blockade of roads to Tijuana’s international airport, impacting thousands of travelers on Wednesday.

The Blockade

The blockade led to delays for many passengers who missed their flights or arrived late. Incoming travelers had to walk over a mile with their luggage as they were unable to access shuttles, taxis, or rideshare services.

Reasons Behind the Protest

Demonstrators claimed their actions were prompted by the Baja California government and former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's failure to provide land titles for their homes. They displayed banners highlighting unmet promises regarding land ownership and local infrastructure such as parks and schools.

Cassandra Hernández, a spokeswoman for the protestors, stated, "More than 4,000 residents are affected." Four months prior, similar protests at a Rosarito oil refinery led to gas shortages as demonstrators sought land titles.

Community Reactions

During this latest protest, many travelers expressed frustration at missing flights or having to walk to find transportation. Some taxi drivers reportedly increased their fares during the situation.

Hernández emphasized their protest was not meant to harm anyone, asserting, "We’re still in this fight, we’re within our rights... all we’re asking is that the titles be delivered as promised." The blockade was lifted after officials in Mexico City agreed to meet with the residents later this week.
