Chinese Tourists Expand Travel Horizons: Growth in Thailand, Korea, Malaysia, Cuba, Mexico, and More

Chinese tourists have shown a significant increase in interest for international travel, especially during this year's National Day holiday, with many exploring unconventional destinations.

Rising Demand for New Destinations

This year, many travelers are focusing on places associated with the Belt and Road Initiative and various African locations. As of mid-September, international flight bookings for the holiday have surged to double that of last year.

Qunar, a travel agency in Beijing, reports approximately 1,600 destinations across 140 countries featured in their international bookings, with over half being newly popular spots in Africa.

The demand is particularly strong among residents of third-tier cities, with a 250% increase in bookings, showcasing a robust travel appetite.

Shifting Travel Preferences

This year's National Day also marks the 75th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, coinciding with a rise in interest for Red tourism linked to Chinese revolutionary history. Autumn sightseeing and family reunions are additional motivations driving travelers to explore a broader range of destinations during this festive period.

Popular outbound destinations continue to include Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, and Osaka, with travelers often preferring a five-hour flight radius, although there is an increasing trend toward exploring farther locations.

Emerging Travel Markets

Countries like Azerbaijan, Cuba, Georgia, Guatemala, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Mexico, Montenegro, Morocco, and Tajikistan are experiencing substantial growth in bookings, reflecting the expanding curiosity of Chinese tourists toward lesser-known destinations.

This trend aligns with a larger tourism movement where travelers seek unique experiences outside traditional hotspots. There is a growing desire for adventure and cultural exploration, particularly in emerging destinations.

Boosting Travel to Africa

The increase in flights between China and Africa, combined with intensified trade relations and cultural exchanges, is positioning Africa as a popular travel destination for Chinese tourists.

This enhanced connectivity facilitates deeper cultural, landscape, and experience exploration, showcasing the rich heritage of Africa and appealing to travelers.

Additionally, people-to-people exchanges are strengthening tourism ties, as Chinese tourists are eager to experience Africa's wildlife and engage with local communities.

Market Recovery Post-COVID-19

As the international travel industry recovers from the pandemic, flight capacities have surged, leading to lower outbound travel costs. Data shows a 20% drop in average ticket prices for popular destinations like Japan, Thailand, and South Korea.

This affordability has prompted a 70% increase in outbound visa applications during the National Day holiday, with travelers applying about 68 days before departure, a month earlier than the previous year.

This proactive planning indicates a significant shift in behavior among Chinese tourists, signifying a new era of exploration and choice within the travel landscape.
