José Luis Zoreda, of the Exceltur tourism association, noted that the sector has previously fueled economic growth; however, intense foot traffic now poses challenges. “While tourism once boosted our GDP, the sheer volume of arrivals has started to create adverse effects, particularly in urban areas,” reflected Paco Femenia-Serra, a tourism lecturer.

Isabel Rodríguez, Spain’s housing minister, raised critical concerns at a recent housing forum. “If locals are forced out, who will serve the tourists?” she questioned, emphasizing that tourism-focused city models risk displacing workers vital to the visitor experience.
