UK tourists warned Spanish hotspot they love is 'on brink of collapse'
UK Tourists Cautioned: Malaga's Overtourism Crisis
British holidaymakers are advised that the beloved Spanish destination of Malaga is nearing a critical tipping point due to overwhelming tourist pressure.
Time for Change: Urban Concerns in Malaga
Kike España, an urban planner, expressed alarm to the BBC about the alarming overcrowding in centres like Málaga’s Plaza de la Merced. He likened the experience to visiting a theme park. "The saturation has led people to feel as if the city is collapsing," he stated.
Economic Gains vs. Urban Strain
José Luis Zoreda, of the Exceltur tourism association, noted that the sector has previously fueled economic growth; however, intense foot traffic now poses challenges. “While tourism once boosted our GDP, the sheer volume of arrivals has started to create adverse effects, particularly in urban areas,” reflected Paco Femenia-Serra, a tourism lecturer.
The Human Factor: Housing for Workers
Isabel Rodríguez, Spain’s housing minister, raised critical concerns at a recent housing forum. “If locals are forced out, who will serve the tourists?” she questioned, emphasizing that tourism-focused city models risk displacing workers vital to the visitor experience.
A Balanced Approach Needed
Espana urged a diverse city approach, warning against prioritizing tourism at the expense of local culture and vitality. “We must not lose the dynamic essence of our cities,” he concluded.
